On 23rd September GPS Marine became the first marine operator to sign a contract for the transport of spoil arising from the Thames Tideway Tunnel project. The contract to transport up to 2m tonnes of excavated spoil from tunnel and shaft excavations associated with the Central Section of the Tideway tunnel scheme was the conclusion of several years of work by teams from GPS Marine Contractors Ltd and the Ferrovial Agroman / Laing O’Rourke Joint Venture (Flo). Spoil will be transported from 6 locations in Central London to Thames-side spoil reception facilities, primarily at East Tilbury and also at Cliffe. The contract requires GPS Marine to provide barges in sizes of between 200 and 1600 tonnes deadweight cargo capacity and to cope with rates of spoil production ranging from just a few hundred tonnes per day to 9,000 tonnes per day on a 24/7 basis.
